Are Appointment Reminder Texts HIPAA Compliant?

Sep 1, 2026 · 5 min read

SMS reminders are not automatically HIPAA-compliant because they are texts. Compliance is about the vendor contract, access controls, and what the message says. A reminder that names the patient, time, and provider is still PHI.

Minimum necessary: date, time, provider, clinic name, CONFIRM / change path. Skip diagnosis and lab results in a reminder SMS unless you have a specific, consented workflow for that — we do not market lab-result blasts as a default product.

Voice reminders should not dump extra PHI on a voicemail unless the patient authorized it. Ask the vendor how unanswered calls are handled before you go live.
