Average Patient No-Show Rate (and Why Yours Differs)
Sep 1, 2026 · 5 min read
Published ranges for US medical practices often land near 15–18% overall. Behavioral health is frequently higher; some procedure-heavy specialties are lower. New patients no-show more than established ones. Appointments booked far in advance no-show more than same-week slots.
Do not manage the practice to a blog average. Pull last month from the EHR: scheduled vs no-show status (exclude provider-cancelled blocks). Then compare to your specialty, not to “healthcare” as a whole.
When you have the percentage, use the no-show calculator for the formula and annual dollars. Software that reduces forgotten visits is on no-show prevention.
